More about discus throwing and hammer throwing
Discus throwing and hammer throwing are technical throwing events within athletics. Both disciplines require a safe and well-equipped throwing area. Think of a suitable throwing ring, protective cage, net structure, throwing sector and any finishing around the ring.
W&H supplies materials for discus throwing and hammer throwing to athletics clubs, municipalities, schools, sports parks and athletics facilities. Within the range, this includes, among other things, discus cages, hammer cage equipment, protective cages, discus rings and inlays.
In discus throwing, the athlete throws a discus from a discus ring with a diameter of 2.50 metres. The throw is carried out from a concrete throwing surface that is fitted with a metal edge. Around the throwing area, a discus cage is installed to protect spectators, officials and other athletes.
A good discus facility consists of a discus ring, a safe protective cage, a proper net structure and a correct throwing sector. W&H can help think about the layout of the complete throwing facility.
Hammer throwing, also known as hammer swinging, is performed from a throwing ring with a diameter of 2.135 metres. The athlete swings a shot on a steel cable as far as possible within the throwing sector.
Because hammer throwing releases high forces and speeds, a good hammer cage is essential. The cage must provide sufficient protection for the surrounding area and must meet the requirements for training and competition use.
An aluminium discus cage is a fixed installation for discus throwing. This cage is installed around the discus ring and is intended to increase safety around the throwing area.
Aluminium is strong, low-maintenance and suitable for long-term outdoor use. As a result, an aluminium discus cage is a durable solution for athletics clubs and sports facilities where regular training or throwing takes place.
A protective cage for discus throwing and hammer throwing can be provided as a fixed installation or as a standalone solution. A fixed installation is usually placed in ground pits, while a standalone protective cage with counterweights can be used when permanent anchoring is not desired or possible.
We supply various versions, including standalone protective cages and protective cages of the Kyrill type. The right choice depends on the facility, the use, the available space and the desired certification.
For competition use, it is important that athletics equipment meets the applicable sports-technical requirements. Our sports-technical athletics equipment is, as much as possible, certified by World Athletics.
This gives clubs, municipalities and facility managers extra peace of mind when setting up athletics facilities for training and official competitions.
Installing a discus cage or hammer cage requires careful preparation. The ring position, throwing sector, ground surface, anchoring, net structure, safety and available space must be taken into account.
We can play a role in the installation of protective cages. We look at the situation on site, the technical requirements and the desired version of the throwing facility.
When purchasing a discus cage or hammer cage, it is important to look carefully at the intended use, certification, height, material, installation method, nets and safety. A training facility sometimes requires different choices than a competition facility.
W&H would be happy to help you find the right solution for your athletics facility. This creates a safe, durable and sports-engineered layout for discus throwing and hammer throwing.

Frequently asked questions
Below is an overview of a number of questions we often get. Can’t find an answer? Then feel free to contact us.
Yes, we can help think about the placement of protective cages. In doing so, we look at the ground surface, ring position, throwing sector, anchoring, safety and practical on-site installation.
A discus cage must protect the surroundings during throwing and must meet the applicable sports-technical requirements. Important aspects include, among other things, the opening, height, net construction, ring position and throwing sector.
A shot put sling cage must be suitable for the higher forces and speeds involved in shot put sling throwing. Important aspects include, among other things, sufficient height, strong nets, movable panels, correct ring position and safe shielding.
Delivery time depends on the configuration, dimensions, stock, custom work, installation and planning. For each request, we can provide an up-to-date delivery time estimate.
A discus ring has a diameter of 2.50 meters. The ring is placed in a throwing plane and combined with a suitable protective cage.
A concentric insert ring is used to adjust the ring diameter, for example when the same cage needs to be suitable for both discus throwing and shot put sling throwing.
