More about play combinations

Play combinations offer different ways to play and move within one piece of equipment. Depending on the location, age group and available space, there are various options. Below you can read more about applications, safety, surfacing and choosing the right play combination.

Play combinations are available in a variety of heights, dimensions and levels of difficulty. This means the layout can be adapted for young children, older children or a combination of different age groups. Low steps, wide platforms and simple play functions fit well for younger users, while higher climbing sections, challenging routes and multiple levels offer more challenge for older children. By looking carefully at the target group in advance, you create a play area that matches children’s motor development and the desired level of play.

A play combination brings together different play activities in one piece of equipment. Children can, for example, climb, scramble, slide, balance and discover without having to leave the play area all the time. This provides variety and encourages children to try out different movements. Depending on the design, play combinations can be expanded with, among other things, climbing nets, slides, bridges, play panels, towers and balance elements.

Play combinations can be used, among other places, on school yards, neighborhood squares, recreation areas and public play spaces. The available space, the age of the users, the desired play value and the intensity of use play an important role in choosing the equipment. For a compact school yard, equipment with multiple play functions may be interesting on a relatively small surface, while at larger locations there is room for more extensive combinations with multiple routes and play zones.

When designing the area around a play combination, you need to take into account the free space, drop height and suitable surfacing. Play equipment for public space must meet the relevant requirements of EN 1176. Depending on the drop height, shock-absorbing surfacing according to EN 1177 may also be required. By looking at the equipment, surfacing and free space as a whole, you create a play area in which play value and safety are well matched.

Not every location calls for the same play combination. For smaller play areas, compact equipment is available in which different functions are cleverly combined. In larger locations, you can choose extensive play combinations with multiple towers, climbing routes, slides and connecting elements. Appearance also plays a role. For example, a play combination can be matched to a natural environment, a themed play area or a modern layout. W&H can think along with you about a suitable composition for the available location.

Frequently asked questions

A play combination is a piece of play equipment that combines multiple play functions. Think of climbing, scrambling, sliding, balancing and discovering within one piece of equipment.

That depends on the equipment. There are play combinations for young children, older children and designs that are suitable for multiple age groups. For each piece of equipment, it is stated for which target group and age it has been developed.

The required space depends on the dimensions of the equipment, the fall height and the required free space around the play combination. So, in addition to the equipment itself, the required safety zone must also be taken into account.

The right surface depends, among other things, on the fall height of the equipment. Depending on the application, for example artificial turf, rubber, wood chips, sand or other shock-absorbing surfaces may be used. The surface must meet the applicable safety requirements.

Yes. We can think along with you about, among other things, age group, available space, desired play value, appearance, surface and budget. This way, a play combination can be chosen that fits the location and users.
