They are ready at virtually every entrance to the field to clean athletes' shoes. With an estimated more than 4,000 artificial turf fields in the Netherlands and an average of 2 to 4 brush mats per field, we are talking about a large number of mats that are used weekly.
In practice, the nylon brushes wear out over time, but the sturdy frame of beams is often still in top condition. And it would be a shame to simply discard that durable frame. That is why W&H Sports offers a circular solution: refurbishing!
What is refurbishing?
Refurbishing means that we replace worn parts of a product, so that the product as a whole gets a new life again. In this case, the old brushes are shaved off. Then the holes are drilled out and fitted with new, biobased fibres of higher quality. The result? A refurbished brush mat that can last for years again, with less impact on the environment.
Why is refurbishing so important?
As a joint venture partner of GreenMatter, W&H Sports does not want to lag behind in offering sustainable solutions. Refurbishing brush mats therefore fits in perfectly with the circular course that we are making increasingly important within our supply programme. Thanks to refurbishing:
- We avoid unnecessary waste because the frame is retained.
- We retain material value, an important step on the Lansink Ladder.
- We extend the lifespan of products, which scores high on the R-Ladder (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish…).
Refurbishing is positioned just below reuse on the Lansink Ladder – a smart and sustainable choice! And within the R-Ladder it is a crucial step towards circular thinking and action: you avoid new production, reduce waste and preserve valuable raw materials.
Sports club of the future
This approach also aligns seamlessly with the future vision for sports facilities. In the "Sports Club of the Future", sustainability is central: circular investments, extending lifespan and conscious material choices are the norm.
You can already see that sports clubs are also including sustainability in their ambition statement. With this solution for potential waste, they are giving concrete shape to that.
A fact to finish with…
Did you know that with one refurbished brush mat we prevent around 30 to 35 kilos of waste? Add the CO₂ savings and lower costs to that, and you will see: refurbishing is not only smart, but also worthwhile.
